Organic to Oxygen, make use of Organic.

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've recently purchased the Astroneer game on Steam and I really like it, but I do have some suggestions to make the game harder to survive. I've realized how little mind I've to pay to the Oxygen and how little use the Organic have. As of right now I don't really see any use of Organic materials in the game besides for the Generators. Also, it's really not a problem to wonder off your base even without placing Tethers on the way and survive for a long time. Oxygen is not a problem in the game at all. I'd like to change this and not have infinite amount of Oxygen in the base and vehicles.

I was thinking about having a decent size dome around the base when you spawn into the world that uses the surrounding plants to get Oxygen for the base and through the Tethers. This dome could be expanded or we could place more around the surrounding area. Or! You could add a new building to the base that would convert Organic materials into Oxygen. I've attached a beautiful paint drawing for you guys to kind of have an idea. I was thinking about having Oxygen tanks that we could place on our vehicles and on the back of our backpack, new slot. The current one on the top of the backpack works, but I'd like to make it replaceable. Lets say my Oxygen ran out in my tank. I walk to my base and switch it out for a full one from the side of the base. I'd still be able to refill the empty one, but not as easily as I do right now. Refilling them would require me putting the tank into the tank slot in the base. I could attach these tanks to the side of vehicles, like 3 on Rovers, and 5 on Trucks,  and I could get the Oxygen through them when I'm close enough to it, but it wouldn't refill it. I could just survive. In order to wonder off again I could grab one of the tanks from the side of the vehicles and replace it with the empty one.

Please let me know what you think!

P.S.: I'm sorry about my English. It's not my native tongue.

I couldn't upload the picture so here is a link for it. http://imgur.com/a/oLlrR

I find this to be a very interesting idea.  I did wonder how we got oxygen from our base and vehicles. But I can see a couple of issues with the idea.

  1. I don't like the idea of a dome already existing on the planet, it kind of takes away the feeling of being the first one there.  Now the Creation of some kind of dome could be entertained.
  2. Without the dome in the beginning, how would you survive the first moments on the planet on initial landing?  Even if you had an extra tank on the habitat at the beginning. It would take time to build an organic/oxygen converter to your base.

I do like the idea in using the organic in a fashion to extend oxygen.  But to change it to what you suggested would be quite the overhaul an could change how the game even begins.

Actually! I like the idea of the vehicles not having filters that seem to supply you with oxygen.  I feel like that should be something unique to the base.  Maybe they could make it so the player would need to research these oxygen tanks for land vehicles and the way advanced research of creating filters for them.

Research tree:

  1. (initial) 3d print large obnoxious tank that can only be printed directly onto the vehicle (2 compound, 2 resin)
  2. (research) 1/2 sized compressed tank that can be made by the 3D printer (2 aluminum, 2 titanium) that may seem like a lot, but it has to hold the massive internal pressure.
  3. (advanced research) vehicle filters or personal filters to turn toxic atmosphere into breathable oxygen. (new materials)

Other research could include a converter to attach to the tank turning organic into oxygen.

I'm aware it would change the whole Oxygen deal in the game, but it would make the game not only harder, but more complex. I still feel like the way we get Oxygen needs to change and need to give Organic more use.

Vehicles supplying Oxygen for no reason is a huge problem in my eyes.

I don't see a problem with having unlimited oxygen. I just see a problem with no explanation how. There should be like a detachable filter that goes on the side of your habitat when you first arrive on the planet. You could then put the filter onto a vehicle or something and that is how you get the oxygen from there

The only problem with the whole filter idea is for planets like the moon (barren) that don't have atmospheres that the filters would work with therefore you have no oxygen to survive which makes going to the moon pointless
