Man of Steel

This just clicked in my brain

Why doesn't out little guy eat or drink in this game? It would be cumbersome to always need to make sure it is done but, the guy is a mortal organic being and needs sustenance to exist. After all this is a survival game in space.

Maybe add an organic processor of some sort to his back pack (or somewhere) to make nutrients out of the organic materials on each planet. Just to deepen the immersion.

Any thoughts?

Nothing in the game suggests Astroneers are mortal organic beings. It is evident in the game that only oxygen and power are required to sustain an Astroneer.

It could also be that the suit provides ample food for the organic lifeform using a trickle-charged, in-suit replication system. Or the tiny amount of food needed to maintain life for even an extended period has been shrunk using Exo technology and stored out of sight.

Whatever the various descriptions of this game might suggest, it's not a survival game beyond minor tethering requirements, and another resource to manage would be distracting and pointless. The devs have pretty much said as much.

like a book or a movie, a game is a deception. it removes those parts of the real world that do not conform to it's needs, that is, the need to entertain. James Bond is never written of (nor seen) going to the toilet, or being put on hold by his energy supplier, or spending long hours immobile under a duvet. the deception is that his life does not contain these mundane elements, and yet we instinctively know that it must. the need to entertain the audience does not require these things, and therefore they can be assumed or ignored by the audience.

the Astroneer Operative, it is believed, requires and receives many things that we are not made aware of, such as food, drink, waste management, artistic stimulus, medical care, and love. the Astroneer Operative's core needs, that of oxygen and work, are those that have been chosen to provide the maximum amount of entertainment to manage by the player. any other requirements are to be assumed or ignored, as the player wishes.

#SpoilerAlert
You clearly haven't beaten the game, otherwise you would have seen the ending scene where they just print another one after the "original" disappeared

Ever wonder why there are so many "dead" astroneers on every planet and why you only see one of yourself at a time (unless you play w/friends)?

Back when Astroneer was just an art project of mine I always imagined the packages they'd send or receive would be packed with edible packing peanuts. You'd literally eat the stuffing of a package to survive.
