Tether grade one = Current 
Tether grade two = Field Oxygenator 
Tether grade three = Personal Oxygenator 

On earth we breathe 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. According to some website I googled. 

Grade one tethers are what we have now. 

Grade two tethers is a machine that is called a Field Oxygenator. It produces oxygen for an area. 1 square mile? 1 round mile? 2 kilometers? 10 acres? 40 hectares? I don't know. All I know is that there is an area around the Field Oxygenator that your backpack can take the oxygen out of the atmosphere produced by the FO, and keep your air breathing bar full. How will you know when you went out of your FO's range? Good question! The air bar on your backpack will begin to decrease. Move closer to your FO and your backpack air bar will increase! It will be an invisible oxygen/no oxygen line so to speak.

Grade three tethers is a Personal Oxygenator. Yeah, I know what your thinking, we already have one! I know, that's what makes this so simple pimple to implement. The new redesigned PO is powered by your Astroneers movement. No more having to carry power and organic and portable generator. Just one slot for the new PO and move. Astroneer movement creates power that operates the PO (which is essentially just a filter that captures the oxygen in the atmosphere and puts it into your oxygen bar in your backpack.) The PO really does not need much energy at all to operate. So just Astroneer movement, walking, running, dancing, waving etc. produces all the energy the PO will ever need to operate. It is just a filter not some space age futuristic technology here folks.  

So for those that like what we have currently. You can have what you like. Always and forever! Tethers!
For those that want to explore with some freedom, a greater chance of getting lost, but not 100% freedom, this is a great middle ground. No need to bring or create tethers on every trip to every planet. Just land, plug in the FO and you have the freedom to roam without tether lines, for "X" amount of area away from your FO. This would be a real time saver as the placing of and picking up of tethers just to gather a resource or two would be saved as well as backpack space and time. Place the FO on your rover and go, go, go! Live tether free on the road! Don't forget we will soon have the capability to create roads! So not having to use tethers would save so much FPS! So, so much FPS!
For those that want the ultimate in exploring with a much greater chance of getting lost is the new and improved Personal Oxygenator which runs on Astroneer power! Sure you may never run out of oxygen but that does not guarantee you will be able to find your base again! Then again what will your FPS look like without a single tether, on any planet!

I like the options you have laid out. Do you anticipate that these tethers will all be made out of the same material [compound], or different combinations of compound+another resource? Any idea on how they will be identifiable in the field or on your backpack?

Basically it is like a habitat or a shuttle that produces oxygen but cannot be tethered to and can have a bigger radius, right?

I love this idea of converting mechanical energy into electric energy, but, but we need to have suit specialisations for this, yes we enter a new topic here, Suit specialisations!! The suit should have a feature which can convert mechanical energy into electric energy and power your backpack, so I guess all this fit into a tether might be overpowered so we can have the portable oxygenator but the suit here is more important, again credit goes to you to build up this idea in my head.

Well the tethers would be the same as we have now. They are the class one, really basic, no frills, just compound like now.

Yeah, exactly. I'm thinking the radius would be "X" size. I don't know what that size should or could be but an invisible circumference of equal distance around the FO.

  Well, not exactly. The PO, would be exactly the same or similar to the one we have now. But rather than needing a seperate power source like now; battery, portable generator, solar, our Astroneer's movement would provide all the energy needed to separate oxygen from the atmosphere. So, no need for extra slots to be used. Just the one backpack slot for the PO and that is it. So I'm not sure we need a Suit Specialisation for this as it is pretty much in game already. Just need a couple of tweaks to get it changed and working more betterer. However, I do like the thought of Suit Specialisations! That is intriguing!

Suit/Player upgrades are definitely due. Storage upgrades and faster Backpack printers would be my choice for upgrades, need to make more packagers lol. +1

this is one of those nice ideas :) +1

I had also idea long ago about those end game things to do: terraforming. I thought of building and powering network of towers which will start creation or transformation of the atmosphere - the longer they work the bigger area becomes breathable.

Imagine clearing Atrox's sky :) it is one of my favourite places actually if only not that toxic fog.

The other branches of terraforming industry would be also ability to grow flora and fauna and make rivers and seas.

OMG, I am getting the Surviving Mars:Green Planet DLC vibes, a very good idea, astroneer can finally be free of their heavy backpacks and roam around freely xD, +1
