has anyone found a good way to activate all towers

Recommended Posts

i have been experimenting ways to get across the plants with a large amount of power but taking all day to get across one of the planets. its a little annoying say the least. the best part is the crashes, nothing says a good way to rage quit a game then lost of a lot of progress. any who i figured towing two large rovers with lots of rtgs is the best way but annoying me to trying to traverse the landscape. i was wondering if anyone else found an easier way to do this.

Instead of rtgs, use medium storages with small batteries. Rtgs output 4 power, 8 small batteries give 8 power. A single medium rover is sufficient to reach the maximum required output, 30, for Atrox. Setting up a large platform which you can repack or leave behind will ensure all power is output rather than using the vehicle connection.

Many will be within walking distance of a shuttle landing spot so you can carry your shuttle over there with a large storage with 3 blades and a packed large platform too.

Here's the power requirements

One large rover with 32 small batteries still leaves room for a drill, an RTG and 2 medium storage on the back and one next to the driver.

They are Gateway Chambers not towers. (Man, I wish people would use the proper nomenclature)

To get across the planets to unlock all the Gateway Chambers, use the large shuttle. Bring tethers and soil. First clear a path from the LZ to the Gateway Chamber using the inhibitor mod you can make rocks disappear without affecting the surface.
Then choose your method of energy to unlock the Gateway Chambers. I drive, @Blind Io apparently carries the shuttle from each LZ to the nearest Gateway Chamber. Whatever mode of transport you use the link @Blind Io provided should give you all the information you will need to unlock each and every Gateway Chamber on each planet so that you will unlock the final achievement and get that last suit.

I drive too! Medium rover except for Atrox. The shuttle thing is just the only other option I've seen.

Once I choose a planet I move sufficient resources with the large shuttle for the unlocking of all gateways. This generally involves about 3 trips (maybe 2 if you're super organised), to carry packaged vehicles, etc. Having finished all planets recently, I could now sit down and plan exactly what I need, making it much more efficient. But things have a habit of going wrong and then you find you need things you weren't expecting. Also, while on the planet, there are specific resources that you might want to collect.

I try to set down close to a gateway. Probably a good idea to plant a beacon right away, for when you return. Then I set up my large rover as described above. Once I unlock the first gateway, I try to follow the starmap to locate the others. Remember that the sun rises in the west and the planet rotates clockwise, and that your orientation from space is north pole is on your right. Everything that can be different to Earth is different.

When you're ready to do the core, I recommend a tractor with #3drill and a trailer with an RTG. Make sure you carry essentials (most important are two resources for the triptychs in the gate - you need to carry one back for later) if anything goes wrong as you carve your way down. It's highly likely you'll have to vacate the vehicle more than once so make sure you have a soil canister, a light, a battery and an oxygen tank (or two of each). Also take three packagers - for the drill, the RTG and the trailer. Leave the tractor at the core for the oxygen if you come back. Then portal back to your base, and you're done.

I recently unlocked all the gateway chambers. For the 2 moons there's no trick, I just drove around til I found them both. For the 5 planets though, I always set up a base at the north pole chamber. From there, I drove a large rover loaded with as many RTGs I needed, south until I found one of the chambers on the equator. There are always 4 evenly spaced on the equator, plus 2 on the poles. So I just drive due east to find all the ones on the equator, then south to the last one at the pole.

For the engines, I just drilled straight down holding whatever resource I would need to unlock it. I took a tractor with a drill, plus a trailer holding an RTG. Reason for this is they are all 1-slot when packaged so I could pick up all 4 and bring them through the teleporter to the next planet.

8 RTGs, started on Atrox, due to finalizing the gases needed to make them. Also by the time I can make 1 RTG, I always have enough ingredients to make at least 8 of them. I shed RTGs as I work my way backwards by order of power requirements. All engines are unlocked by this time since all bases are created next to a surface chamber. Easy.

Not that it matters, but...

A medium storage full of batteries provides 8U/s compared with an RTG which delivers 4U/s for the same space required. One RTG will supply energy to as many batteries as you have, so 32 batteries (4 medium storage) as opposed to 8 RTGs takes up half the space on the rover (plus one RTG). Which means you can carry a lot of extra stuff (which you probably don't need ;-)).

Also, you only a shitload of lithium to craft those batteries, while RTGs require more varied resources and more complex processing.

8 RTGs are more efficient for me to carry around. Once repacked, they fit on my backpack along with the diamond drill for gateway traversal or a single medium storage if by shuttle, and less total items to manage.

RTGs actually have a higher throughput than medium batteries on top of being producers instead of storage. (RTG=4A, batteries=3A). So, aside from resource restrictions preventing you from creating RTGs, there's no need to use medium batteries once you can make RTGs.

If we're talking about a medium storage with 8 small batteries, that's actually a huge resource dump (8 lithium = 32 scrap). It's way more expensive than 1 RTG if you go by scrap value. Personally I would never do it, mainly because I wouldn't end up using all those little batteries for anything else afterwards.

I go with the 8 RTGs for the power requirement - the batteries aren't particularly dependable (at least in my experience), when they're on a Medium Storage, that's on a Large Storage, that's on a Large Rover: they don't all discharge, and seem to be charging each other first, instead, so the power output is insufficient. This is from collecting small batteries from wrecks, and trying to use them to unlock Gateway Portals (might just be a bug that's specific to the way I was trying to use them)

I made about 40 small batteries (I did exploit the battery/scrap bug, I must confess. I was tired of scrounging for resources and wanted to focus on the gateways) and used them to unlock the last 3 planets. I had an RTG on the back and a drill on the front. 32 fit on the large storage and I had some spare on a medium storage. RTGs are certainly very useful because they have infinite power. Whatever does the job is OK. My point was that the small batteries take up a lot less space.

They do (slightly less than half, vs RTGs)… do they not have the charging-each-other issue on Medium Rovers?

This is what did it for me:

3 RTGs, 3 Medium Bats, 3 Large Platform Bs, and enough packagers to put away the shop back in the Large Shuttle. And off to the next planet!
