Anyone think this is a good idea? A satellite launched from a platform, into space, and orbits the current planet, and has a camera that can be accessed from the surface, to make time lapses and stuff. I think it would be a nice touch.

Maybe having  different satellites for different purposes: on for resource searching and one for finding vehicles/ broken shuttles?

+1 definitely, just a chance to spot my current position from space would be an excellent thing worth researching/building for...

Maybe you could have different modules you take up and deploy from space, you could have like a docking system to launch ships for longer trips like how we do it on earth: take the stuff into orbit and then send it from there to reduce fuel usage. Also you could put different types of sensors that let you detect stuff on whatever planet it's going around, like cameras you can zoom, molecular spectrometer (to ascertain chemical makeup of soil and locate resources), and other stuff like that.

Maybe have a camera one that will track your position anywhere on the surface, with a separately crafted viewer. Have it so if you set it down it'll show a 2m by 2m holographic map table (showing only what you've explored since the creation of the satellite, since it follows you) with you at the center. Toss it on the backpack utility slot and act as a toggleable minimap showing our surrounding 100m or so.
