Simple you die that's it.
On a bigger scale you need to collect certain resourses for your ship before the system is destroyed, black hole passing through etc

Such a game mode would be good up until the first time you make it out of the planet. Once a META is determined, it would be a repetitive mode and will lose its appeal.

At least make it reset your research so you have more to lose. It’s a less hardcore version of what you are wanting. People could still have a casual gaming session but feel the tension of being lost in a cave. We all have been there. Lol

yeah, permadeath in games that ask you to invest hours in gameplay is a really tricky thing. big said it best: you die, you delete. self-imposed permadeath like that makes the same experience for you, without forcing it on players who'd prefer the more casual side of the game.

i'd be all for difficulty settings that can be changed on the fly though. start off as hardcore as you please, then back it off as the hours add up and losing it all would be a deal breaker that turns you away from the game for a while:

NORMAL: as it is now

EASY: their slightly-harder version of minecraft's 'peaceful'... reduced damage from flora+fauna (still SOME damage, just not instant-dead if you dig up an exploder from too close), similarly reduced damage from storms: you still need to find safety, but you can take a few rocks to the bean before you go down

HARD: as it is now, but with a few catches (pick and choose what would seem most fair while still ramping it up a little)... dead body doesn't drop to be picked up again (or new body has no backpack, that must be picked up from the old body), current 'leftover' bytes in the catalog reset *OR* all research resets (the new you didn't get the memos from the old you :P )

HARDCORE: as it is now, but with permadeath
