Items I use/don't use

Medium Printer: (yes) although since it is the only printer the size medium does not mean all that much.

Small Fabricator: Once or twice? I can’t remember if I use it after I unlock the medium fabricator. I don’t think I do use it after the medium fabricator is unlocked.
Medium Fabricator: Yes


Vehicle Bay: Yes

 Medium Platform A: a couple of times
Medium Platform B: maybe twice?

Large Platform A: Yes
Large Platform B: Not so much
Large Platform ? Great with the modules that fit
Large Platform ? Great for storage and organization

Extra Large Platform: Rarely. It is however the best looking, however it only holds single items. Which I use for decoration/aesthetics, but I don’t use this platform for gameplay. 

Medium Platform: A lot
Large Platform: On the shuttle & rover (if it worked)
Extra Large Platform: Maybe one or two for aesthetics only

Mods: Boost/Narrow/Wide/Alignment: I think I may have tried them all once and that was it? I think some worked at some point then they don’t, but others do then they don’t? Anyway, I may have used them a couple of times but not enough to remember one. 

Dynamite: Once, maybe twice?
Fireworks: Once, maybe three times?

Beacon: Yes
Work Light: Yes (sure could use some improvements/advancement here)

Crane: I only build one per session
Drill Head: I only build one per session

Winch: I never build one as I can always find multiple winch’s in caves. I’ve used a winch maybe twice. Cool idea with less than optimal results. Can’t blame the winch as the rovers are the cause.

Large Rover? When it works properly
Shuttle? Never
Large Shuttle? Always
Open One Seat? Always
Open Three Seats? Never

I concur pretty much with almost everything on your list, except I like to have a large rover with an open 3-seat just in case my friends join my game.

Trade Platform: I use it all the time, especially when I need a quick compound/resin shipment if I feel too lazy to gather soil.

Dynamite: I always keep at least 4 in storage, just in case. The rest I detonate where I find them...

I agree on the work lights, they need TLC.

Can you use an open one-seat to pilot the large shuttle?

had to rush edit when I submitted too early.
This post is a good idea, it can be food for thought for the devs. 
I wish they would use this as a foundation for an opinion survey where we could explain our playstyle in a formal, analyzable way, so they would understand what works for whom and what doesn't.
I started using the extralarge platform and storage when I saw your post about using them as center lights. I'm pretty sure you were under the influence when you wrote that ^^.

I don't tend to play the game as intended so I thought it would be interesting to see how many of the items I use with my current rule set. I never use the Terrain Tool for Digging and have recently stopped using any Power source other than what I find on the surface. Once 7.0 is out I'm going to see if I can ban the Inhibitor as well.

only thing different from most of your lists is I never use the worklight, always use the power mods, never use large solar panels or large wind vanes (just use a ton of small ones), and only use the printer for the large battery and medium storage. also i could care less about dynamite.

Also I don't use the round thingy with the airport runway lights that flops down next to the base when first starting. I don't go to that round platform thing and do anything. I did the first couple of times, then I forgot the third time and have never used it since. 

I thought at first it was pretty cool. Now since I don't use it, it just gets in the way

With reference to people piloting the shuttle from an open seat, I find that a totally alien idea.  It's just something I could never do as it doesn't "feel right" in my mind when playing the game.  I've got to wait, research and build the enclosed seat to protect myself during space flight.

It's funny how we all play the game differently.

I use it because it's the quickest way to get started but i hear ya about getting in the way. I don't understand why it is so big. i would prefer to just get rid of it and do it another, more compact way.

The first couple of times I played I used it. Then I forgot to use and the third time. Have not used it since. I used to think it was cool but now it is ugly. If someone uses it they use it twice and never again?

it never occurred to me that you could go without using it, but i guess you can as the stuff is unlocked in your catalog...

as for items i use... 

Medium Printer: always

Small Fabricator: to make a medium fabricator
Medium Fabricator: always

well i really have no idea which platforms are which, i just use the standard "medium?" one and the big octagon one that goes under my habitat (which glitched into the air above the ground without grey dirt when it updated) and holds my battery power and provides extra power inputs/outputs


Vehicle Bay: always

Mods:  made them a few times to experiment but nah, not worth the item slots they use up

Dynamite: only use the ones i find for fun, and maybe made a few when i glitched myself into a research chamber...
Fireworks: only used the ones i found

Beacon: never made one, then i found one on a dead guy though 
Work Light: always

Crane: always build at least one at each base
Drill Head: however many needed for cranes

Winch: found one and thats all i needed really

Small Rover: that thing is amazing, use it all the time

Medium Rover: not all that much actually... need to use it more
Large Rover: working on a mobile base so yea
Shuttle: once and never looked back
Large Shuttle: always
Open One Seat: for rovers or seat glitch (which kinda still exists but is so hard it isnt practical anymore :P)
Open Three Seats: once on my big rover
Habitat: one per base
Enclosed One Seat: only two for my shuttle
Enclosed Three Seats: one on my big shuttle

Tethers: kinda have to, at least until i have the small rover
Filters: not once
Small Oxygen Tank: yea i use that
Extenders: only cause i needed them
Splitter: not yet
Power Cells: once cause i thought it was a battery
Small Battery: i found all i needed
Medium Battery: lots

Small Generator: yep
Medium Generator: yep, great for underground base (like deep underground base)

Hydrazine Catalyzer: once on my main base (need more on other planets as it is that only place in the solar system to refuel...)

Trade Platform: one on my main base, dont use it much
Canister: all the time
Inhibitor Mod: no
Terrain Analyzer: no, but need to at some point

Wow... So many different approaches to playing Astroneer.

After reading through all these, I realize how completely differently you all play from both each other and from the way I play.

There's a lot of stuff I only use once in any given game, some I never use, some I use all the time... Let's see...:

  • Small Fabricator: Once to make a Medium Fabricator, then never since (haven't been doing a lot of multiple base building since the Basebuilding Update- ironically)
  • Medium Fabricator: All the time.
  • Platforms: Mostly Large A. If I'm using wind power, I use the Small Platform A (?), cause it only needs to hold the Medium Turbine. Large C is for Fuel Condenser.
  • Medium Printer: All the time.
  • Vehicle Bay: Absolutely. Once I'm ready to start interplanetary, I place one such that my shuttle will land on the round starting platform, and my Rover Bay well away from that.
  • Research Module: All the time.
  • Smelter: All the time.
  • Mineral Extractor: Occasionally, most often for basic materials, when the local supply gets thin. Rarely for a second Lithium for another battery.
  • Trade Platform: Rarely.
  • Habitat: Every time I make a new base.
  • Hydrazine Catalyzer: Very rarely. Generally only collect Ammonium to have one full Platform A for collection, use Condenser for fuel.

 

  • Small Solar: Early game and Small Rover. Then no more.
  • Medium Solar: All the time.
  • Small Wind Turbine: Almost never. Haven't made one in a long time.
  • Medium Wind Turbine: Only when I cannot find enough Lithium for enough batteries and solar.
  • Small Battery: One on any Small Rover. If found, possibly on Medium Rover or backup power for base.
  • Medium Battery: All the time. Exclusively for Base Power.
  • Small Generator: Often. Early game Base Power boost. One on every Large Rover, possibly on Medium Rover as well.
  • Medium Generator: Never. Coal collection makes it inefficient.
  • Beacon: Quite often. Marks notable caves, wreckage, or path to base (each one placed at a point just in view of the last one)
  • O2 Tank: When I find them. Generally never make them. ONE on shoulder mount point.
  • Work Light: One (or more) on every Large Rover, since the Open 1-seat won't point forward on the Large Rover. Occasionally one on shoulder mount for caving.
  • Tether: All the time. I wanna breathe. And see...
  • Extenders: If using wind power, or spreading out my base.
  • Splitters: Only used one when routing wind power around base.
  • Filters: Never. Hate them.
  • Power Cell: Never. Hate them.
  • Fireworks: Only if found.
  • Dynamite: Stock up if found, use to dispose of Small Shuttle, glitched items.
  • Mods: Inhibitor - All the time. All others - Almost never.
  • Terrain Analyzer: Not until it actually works consistently.
  • Canister: All the time.

 

  • Small Rover: All the time. LOVE that thing!
  • Medium Rover: Rarely since the Rover Update. Small Rover covers me till Large Rover unlocked.
  • Large Rover: All the time. Workhorse. Load up with supplies, return for work surge, then off to refill it.
  • Small Shuttle: Only to print first Closed 1-seat Cockpit. Then blown up.
  • Large Shuttle: Any time I go extra-planetary.
  • Medium Storage: All the time.
  • Large Storage: All the time. On all platforms I intend to use for material storage. On Large Rovers. On Large Shuttles.
  • Extra Large Storage: Never.
  • Crane: Almost never. Last time I made one, was to bore to Terran Center to harvest Astronium. Well before Base Building Update.
  • Drill Head: Almost never. Same as Crane.
  • Open 1-seat: All the time.
  • Open 3-seat: Only if I'm playing multiplayer, and we're only using one of a given vehicle.
  • Enclosed 1-seat: On every Shuttle.
  • Enclosed 3-seat: Only in multiplayer.
  • Winch: If found, to drag Large Solar Panel to base. (Only did once. Ever.)

I think that's it...

I find myself using the "Power Cells" more often now. A while back I had requested that they show up sooner in the tech tree as they were releasing research 2.0 ..along with "Filters". This was simply because they were pretty useless late game ( at the time ) ..Now I use them fairly regularly when I'm on the go. And it's great to have them - you'd be surprised how far you can run with a few filters and a single tank - all derived from compound.

Both filters and power cells will recharge air tanks and batteries - they will also deplete before other on hand resources do ( although I think the manner in which the small battery functions while on the astroneer and the rovers is bugged at the moment ...they'll still charge those ).

I find I've been using the power cells on the rovers, etc simply due to the high availability of compound and their automatic natures.

It would be nice if I could find some actual numbers or durations for these.. I give credit to the fact that they physically show wear-down use via model changes, but the blue or yellow bar either flashing or not existing (batteries and filters as of 0.7) is odd when compared to the metered style of everything else...I hope they address this graphical issue soon.

I've only used the crane once in the 90 or so hours of playing - and that was just to see what it was all about.

I'm now taking a liking to using that weird platform with the two vertical storage panels as the platform of choice for things like the hydrazine catalyzer.

Extra research chambers can go on that platform that can only hold one building.. seems to save space.

The extra large platform is very nice, but it's module layout is sorely lacking for it's size - it could store three buildings if they were offset by 120 degrees - and this would be an awesome platform to throw three research chambers on.

If I could print the extra large storage on top of the starting habitat or the beginners platform - I would.
