Mouse and keyboard, Steam XL (and maybe smaller versions) shredder sometimes becomes completely silent during shredding things
-
Hello, I found this accidentally. I am not sure if this should be reported publically - the issue is present in the latest Astroneer version (Steam) on Windows 10. Summary: Exploit for getting unlimited scrap from shredder Description: By doing certain steps you can get virtually unlimited scrap from the big shredder (did not text on the small one). Platform: Steam /Windows 10 Version / Build Number: 1.0.7 Specifications: Don't matter See attached screenshot - it took me less than 4 minutes of shredding to make that pile.

When using my extra large shredder, the game will crash. I tried destroying it and creating a new one but it did not work. Just now when I tried to recreate it to make a video, the shredder closed its door even though its sitting on a powered platform. See attached picture. It shows a solar panel connected to an extra large platform. You can see they’re both powered but the shredder door is still closed. The scrap sitting there is stuck too. I believe if I could get that scrap off, it would open up again.

Summary: 1.13.126.0 - Steam - Resource Canister + Shredder Bug Description: First issue: The Resource Canister can get stuck outputting resources so the output has a partial resource and will not output any more showing 0/32. It will let you put in a different resource which you then cannot output. Second Issue: When you then shred this Resource Canister, the shredder spawn a large number of connectors instead of the standard graphics. Platform: Steam Version / Build Number: 1.13.126.0 Specifications: OS: Windows 10 Pro x64 | v. 1909 | Build 18363.900 CPU: Intel i7 8700K GPU: GTX 1070 Ti RAM: 2x16GB Drive: Samsung 860 Evo 1TB Dedicated Server on nitrado Looks to be same issue as the below post.

Hey guys! I will say, I haven't run into a bug since late 2017! Specs - PC Win10 Build1909 - I9 9900K - 2x GTX2080Ti SLI - 32GB DDR4 - installed on 1TB nVme m.2 This XL shredder issue only started popping up after this most recent automation update. I have also done it on 3 seperate occasions just to ensure it was, 1- in fact a bug, and 2 - it was replicable. When running a medium rover through the XL shredder, about a third of the way through, it begins to stall similar to stalling when you don't have enough power for it to draw. Like it doesn't have enough torque to overcome the object. Disconnecting all power, it was still attempting to shred. Running direct power to it from 3 RTG and a few other different setups, it never completed the shred. You are unable to remove the partially shredded rover, or the scrap bundle (in one case it was a full bundle, still stuck attached). When logging back into the game, red doors were closed (no object clipping through the doors like canister issue) and completely unusable. Only way I have found is to blow it up. I have not attempted with anything other than medium rover, it was just what I had laying around. After 3 tests, i think i will wait before destroying anymore resources. If you need anymore information, please let me know and I will be happy to provide!

We're playing with one of my mates Astroneer and suddenly he put the large resource canister (it had about 50 aluminium and it didnt drop them so we decided to take it down for a couple of scraps -also a bug-). Suddenly, it started dropping all those red things around which made us quit and rejoin. Once we rejoined, they were still there. Can anyone help? I'm sorry if I post my bug in a the wrong place, I'm new around here. Also, give a tip about my FPS dropping while my friend got 120. We have the same specs (a fine computer). Thanks everyone!

Last night Joe teased some changes to shredding and what is and isn't scrappable. This certainly isn't a new topic of discussion for this forum, we have talked about it many, many, many, many, many, many, many times (I undoubtedly missed some of the many) -- but Joe asked so let's talk! What do you think is small enough to be added to the Shreddable-Items list? What items should not be shreddable? The things that came up right out of the gate when he asked were: Add: + Platforms + Packaged items Don't Add: - Shuttles

I'd like to make a suggestion for a new terrain tool modifier. I would place this modifier as a late game item, but it might be able to be implemented at different game stages if it were balanced correctly. The function of this modifier is similar to that of the shredder modules which are already in the game. These take wrecked modules and platforms, among other items, and shred them into the Scrap resource, which can be used in the trade station. Equipping the Shred Modifier would allow the player to convert wrecks that they find in the world, which they would then 'dig up', into scrap nodes, which would build on the end of the terrain tool and pop into the player's inventory like all other mined resources. This would allow the player to obtain scrap without the use of a shredder. This is a very lucrative ability, which is why I have considered it to be a late game item. However, if put into development, it could feature balancing debuffs, such as providing only a fraction of the scrap that could be obtained if a shredder were used. A potential benefit for implementing this item from a development perspective is it may allow players to shred the majority of game items. Currently, there is no way to recycle large items in the game. The only method of destroying them is by using dynamite, which does not recover any of the resources used to build these large items and modules. For example, the introduction of the Extra Large shredder allowed the recycling of the Large Shredder. However, what can be used to recycle the Extra Large Shredder? Will we need an even larger shredder? And what will shred that even larger shredder? The introduction of the Shredding Modifier would allow the player to shred all of these items, regardless of the size, providing a solution to this infinite series of ever-increasing shredder sizes. Please leave your thoughts below, to continue the discussion As always, thank you to SES for your continued hard work and dedication to Astroneer, and I hope that if this is seen then this suggestion is considered. - Cinnamunoo

It seems that following achievements are not working. "Making a New Friend" "Chop Shop" (assumed) "In An Astroneer's Garden" I've planted many seeds to germination, and I've shredded many more than 50 objects. I am so close to 100% completion...

With the introduction of the extra large shredder, and it’s inability to shred base platforms(unless packaged), I thought it would be a good idea to add a handheld shredder/ shredding terrain tool augment. This would allow us to shred things like platforms, taking longer but yielding more scrap the larger the item is. Things you can’t pick up such as the exo dynamics research aid bottoms should be shreddable as well. If the non-augment portable shredder is implemented maybe other handheld devices such as an object scanner or a portable welder could be explored.

The shredders are great and all but man do they make a racket! It makes it very hard to hear anything else when standing anywhere near one.

The feature wherein removing and replacing an RTG on a shredder platform/vehicle without accidentally shredding it appears to be non-functional as of 1.0.9. If this is intentional, again, I have to wonder if whoever is making these "fixes" has ever actually played the game. "Boy, I have too many RTGs, I guess I have to scrap some." is not a problem anyone playing this game has. However, "$%#%!!! I accidentally shredded my expensive and very valuable RTG" IS very much a problem people playing this game have. A real solution, if this feature is indeed perceived as a "bug," would be to introduce the option to turn the shredder on/off before socketing things onto its platform.

I would really like to be able to use a drill and crane to break down all the detritus around my area to use as scrap. As you use more and more resources, they become more scarce and I rely mostly on my trading platform when things become frustrating to find. The idea of having a trading platform is really amazing but finding scrap for it is really scarce. I really like the idea of attaching a crane, drill, some medium batteries, starage, and a large shredder on some rovers to go around the cleaning up and picking up scrap.

Summary: 1.0.7 - Steam - Infinite Scrap Description: I was on multiplayer with a friend and we put a small battery in a medium shredder that was on a trailer. Half way through the shredding process, my friend (the host) removed the battery from the shredder, This caused the battery to be able to be placed in backpacks, on cars, ect. and it worked as a normal battery. However the shredder carried on shredding/ generating scrap and will continued to do so until the of the shredding process, at this point the battery returned to being completely normal, rather than randomly changing size like it did during the shredding process. (We tested and it does work in the large shredder as well) Platform: Steam Version / Build Number: 1.0.7.0

I've got a shredder on a rover with a large storage, medium battery, some small solar and wind. I put a full canister of soil in and the battery died before it finished shredding it. When the sun came up for the recharge, it didn't finish it. I put in another. It's now stuck and totally clogged. Recharging and draining the rover doesn't restart it. Reloading the save doesn't help. I have no alternative but explosives I think, but I wanted to log it and maybe come up with an alternative solution until a fix.explanation comes through. Up side is my shredder has eyes and it makes a funny rover, just very very useless.

I am wondering if the shredder will eventually generate scrap metal if it is fed smelted ores. Right now it is not possible to trade resources since the shredder does not accept metal ingots from the smelter. I assume that more of the wreckage we encounter in the game will eventually be able to be shredded.

This is a simple suggestion. Add a button (or hotkey) that hard-resets the open module. Essentially delete all items on the module, delete the module, and re-create the module, as if it was freshly placed. The benefits of this is it would allow us to reset batteries, shredders, chemistry stations, or any other module manually when it dicks over. The latter two are particularly prone to jamming.

I noticed that the shredder can't shred everything craftable, but only some stuff. Sometime you find an abandoned base, and you're looking for extra scrap, sometime you built something on mistake (or you want just to upgrade the platform it is built in). Also, everything you create with the vehicle printer is permanent. Often I have to dig a "shame hole" where everything I don't need gets dumped. Like abandoned platform after I build a base on barrens to feed on a huge broken complex. So a solution can be more shreddable stuff: platform, what is on platform, rover, large storage, etc... of course something to cut stuff in smaller pieces is needed, maybe separating the building from the platform before shredding (this give you the possibility to repack the building and change its platform) Another would be a dissasemble type of building: you destroy stuff by getting resources back, maybe only the rare one (if something needs resin and iron, you get only the iron back), or maybe something even different (you get all for the solid thruster, but just the aluminium from an used one). In this way, it feels like you can disassemble abandoned bases or "fixing" them by re-crafting the items. Or even better a way to repack stuff. Like a repacker. for repacking broken stuff (of course) other materials are needed (to simulate the fixing) What do you think?

I have recreated this several times. Basically if you shred an oxygen tank in a large or medium shredder while the tank is full then the shredder will not complete its task and no longer can be used. The oxygen tank becomes stuck in the top of it and blocks new items. If you destroy the shredder with dynamite then the full tank is intact and usable. This problem does not arise when shredding empty oxygen tanks. Must be because oxygen can't be shredded. Windows 10 Pro; Intel i7 7700k OC to 5.1ghz; GTX 1080; 16GB DDR4 RAM

The shredder mechanic/scrap is quite interesting in term of resource management. It allows the player to decide what resources they can get, making it quite a nice addition to the game. It also makes an alternative resource reward for exploration, a thing that I gladly welcome. Well, at least in theory. The reality is that it is not quite right. There are some inherent problems with the mechanics. Medium shredder: Kind of useless because it cannot shred much so there is nothing to say about it. It is better to spend a bit more research points and aluminium to get the Large one from the get go. Large shredder: Energy consumption: Extremely bad, particularly if placed on a rover to shred while exploring. The idea of getting the scrap to shred while exploring is very nice, but the problem is that it slows way too much the exploring part. Even if you just explore to get scrap it is quite slow, not only because of the shred speed, but also because the energy consumption is too high to bother to move while shredding. Shredding speed: Slow. The shredding speed is a bit slow. This is also a problem when trying to explore and shred what you find in your way. It seems that it is better to just ignore the debris while exploring. Lack of buffer: Seriously? Only one object at a time? If the shredding speed is not bad enough, the fact that there is no buffer to add more debris to shred at the same time make it even worse. Or let say in another way, if you add a buffer the shredding speed would be of less concern and the exploration speed would increase making it viable (if the energy consumption is lessened a notch or two). Rover are not equipped with a dump box: As far as I can tell, it is not possible to easily move the small debris around, you know, like a truck with a dump box. The lack of options to move the debris makes the collection of debris almost non-existent unless you put the shredder on a rover (and the energy consumption...). The amount of scrap is good enough: Even-though I don't particularly enjoy the lack of buffer and the absurd energy consumption of the shredder, I feel like the amount of scrap that you can obtain is good enough. It is not too much that make gathering resources useless, but is not too few that make it worthless. I would say it is a bit on the low side if you take into consideration the previous points, but if those are fixed the amount would be good enough or even better (though that may need a bit of a nerf, small nerf). Not all debris are shred-able: And I don't mean making those big crashed space stations. I mean things like broken platforms. I hope that this get into the next patch. Scraps: The scrap as a trading currency is great. For most part I feel that is balanced, except for the higher tier materials (lithium, titanium). I think that these are a bit too expensive. Reducing to a 1 per 3 scraps may do the trick. Also, with the high energy consumption of the large shredder, lithium is more valuable more than ever (particularly on the rover). Closing arguments. The shredder idea is a great one in terms of enriching the game-play. It allows for diverse strategies mostly tied to exploring the planet. But the lack of a buffer and the energy consumption of the large shredder, or the lack of a dump box for the rovers, make exploration to slow down too much. It seems faster and more entertaining to just quickly explore the debris and hope to find rare materials like lithium. Also, not all debris are capable of being shred to scrap. If this are fixed I feel that the shredder might get better.
