I set up a base at the top of a mountain near the south pole thinking it would be a good experiment in solar power capabilities. The problem is, it doesn't really work, at least how I expect it to.
If I attach a mobile solar power unit to the habitat, then it points to the sun as it transverses across the sky. If I take the same unit and attach it to my backpack, it no longer tracks or provides power. If I open my pack, then the solar panel will point to the sun (then pop back up when I collapse the pack).
Large solar panels don't open at all when attached their proper ports. But if I let one tilt on the mountain, it will open (useless for the base, however).
The mountain is lit by the sun, and shadows do pass as the sun goes behind other mountain ranges.
Initial base shot to show where it resides in relation to the sun. Created a stepped down series of ports to use for solar.
