    Email to System Era Support

I wanted to post my email to SES for public viewing. Maybe if enough emails are sent, the devs will finally start paying attention here. Comments are welcome and I'm hoping I will get a response from them eventually. Any response would be better than nothing. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hello System Era, I am writing this message in the hopes that you will read it and reply, or at least take it into consideration. To start, I very much enjoy Astroneer. The concept is awesome and it has great potential for expansion into something greater. The ability to sculpt the planets however I want is something that has kept me playing. Also, space is one of my favorite subjects and was what got me interested in your game in the first place. Having said that, I have been met with many disappointments. The greatest of these is the fact that you, the developer and creator of the System Era forum, have no real presence in said forum. There are a multitude of posts on bugs and crashing issues (mine included) that have gone ignored. In your latest update, 1.1.2, a number of members have complained of crashing within the first 30 minutes of play which is generous to say the least. This was originally an issue in the 1.1.0 EFT 'beta' you held on steam that carried over to 1.1.2. Other members also posted this game breaking bug, who also went unheard. The latest semi-stable version is 1.0.15, which I have been able to play for several hours before crashing which would usually freeze the entire system requiring a hard reset. I purchased the game after reading reviews on Steam, YouTube, and various other sites. After watching several YouTube game play videos and seeing the smoothness of the frame rate I decided that I would pay the $30 to get the game. I started playing version 1.0.7 which also had crashing and whole-system freezing issues. From that moment, I thought that this couldn't be the full release version of the game. I was wrong. Thus the second major disappointment. Astroneer went from alpha straight to a 1.0 'full release' without having a beta test to work out the bugs of the release version. From what I have read on the forum, the game was more stable in alpha than it was after 1.0. I have played many games over the years and very rarely have I seen a game that had more issues post-release than pre-release. The third disappointment was that I was excited for a well-made game with a wealth of future updates from what seemed like a group, however small, of experienced developers. I have played many of the games that some of your developers had a hand in creating. The fact that quantity over quality seems to be the name of the game when it comes to Astroneer was very unexpected. For example in the latest update, we were given access to the extra large scrapper. A number of us were unable to use this because of the crashing issue that carried over from EFT. I couldn't get past the first two to five minutes after loading my save before crashing to even be able to craft it. Content updates are all well and good as long as the game is playable. Which at this point it is not. Many games that are worth-while and satisfying aren't pretty but they are more than functional. I am not saying the game is not worth-while but it has become less than satisfying. I have enjoyed the game enough to the point that I went through the frustrating process of downgrading to a previous version so I could play a semi-stable version of the game. Which brings up an important point. If you are going to update the game and ignore the bug reports, at least give us the courtesy of including the previous version under the beta tab in Steam. Other games have done this simply because some players enjoy certain versions over newer updates. In this case it would give us, the players, something to fall back on in the event an update goes haywire. Recently, a fellow member came up with some great ideas on how to improve communication with your player base. mystikro, a member of the forum had this to say, addressed to SES_joe: "Choose a team of free QA testers/players that get early access to builds (daily, or as soon as you have one ready). I think steam can help you with this, they have beta codes and stuff where you can enter that and gain access to it. The community can enroll and log bugs for you guys (JIRA or anything open source). You get free QA, the players feel like they are part of the development." https://forum.systemera.net/topic/52701-is-astroneer-no-longer-supported-by-devs/ He continues further down with: "And all you need is one QA manager. Someone to supervise the QA process. Someone that is active and interacts with the QA and the forum. You took refuge in the Discord server and don't really care for the users on Steam or on the forum. I think that is a bad approach. Get one community manager to have daily contact with the users so that the forum doesn't feel like an empty echo." https://forum.systemera.net/topic/52701-is-astroneer-no-longer-supported-by-devs/ None of this is unreasonable. In fact, this would be extremely beneficial to System Era. It would increase your player base which would in turn increase positive feed back and word-of-mouth advertising which is highly cost effective thus increasing profits. Currently, as I'm sure you're aware, Astroneer is $30 on Steam which in my personal opinion is at least double what is should be considering the state the game has been in for some time now. Another point I would like to make is about your Discord page. Wyvyrias posted: July 19, 2017 "To make sure everyone is aware that we have a Discord server for the whole community! The developers (and Joe) are around as well and sometimes chat with us, too. We'll also try to keep you up-to-date about important events about Astroneer. Feel free to join if you haven't already (and don't forget to read #information)..." https://forum.systemera.net/topic/29926-astroneer-discord-server/ After becoming frustrated with the lack of communication from SES on the forum, I decided to join your Discord server and try to contact someone there. I became extremely confused when I read through your rules, specifically rule 10 and #5 under additional notes: 10. | Do not ping the developers. Face it, SES is busy and can't take care of the individual messages of thousands of people. Use the forums or talk to the community. (5) Do not DM or ping anybody (especially not the staff/moderators) without a good reason (for example, you are free to DM a mod if someone is breaking the rules). This is somewhat misleading regarding what was posted on the Discord announcement post on the forum. It seems to tie our hands behind our backs seen as any kind of System Era presence is non-existent on the forums, almost as if the community is expected to fix issues with the game or given a single choice and that is to live with said issues. That's like me saying to you, "Buy this overpriced car, with warranty, and if it breaks give me a call. Oh, wait. I forgot to tell you the warranty is void and I've turned off my phone. But here's the number of a plumber who I've never met." I don't want a refund, I want a working game. That's all. I don't think this is too much to ask especially when I paid my own hard-earned money for it, along with many others. I believe Astroneer holds great promise for the future and even with all of the major issues it currently has, it is still a beautiful game. When it isn't crashing. I hope someone from System Era will respond to this email and the issues within resolved. I don't expect it to happen overnight. I understand that such things take time, energy, and of course money. At least take the time to read this as I have also spent my time and energy trying to get Astroneer to work, as well as money spent purchasing your game. -Thank You, GeneralMayonaise Active System Era Forum Member -----------------------------------------------------------
  2. Summary: 1.1.0 - Steam - Freezing While Digging/Walking Version: 1.1.0 flight test. Description: I have been experiencing freezing while digging. Also, when walking to a distance of one tether from base on Sylva (new save) and placing the tether the game freezes a few steps past said tether. When I open the Task Manager (thankfully my entire computer doesn't freeze like before), it shows Astroneer as not responsive. System: Windows 7 Ultimate SP2 Intel i-5 Quad Core 2.3 GHz Nvidia Geforce 930M 2 GB 8 GB Ram 2 TB HDD I know this is a beta and is prone to bugs. However, what I don't understand is why the game does this now. For me at this point, the game is once again unplayable. I look forward to a response, Thanks
  3. Dear System Era, I just joined after searching your forums for an answer to why the game is unplayable. After searching for several hours on multiple occasions, I haven't found a single question on this forum you have answered. As of today, I have stopped playing Astroneer four times for extended periods because of game breaking bugs and crashes. I've also gotten tired of causing damage to my hardware from several hard resets nearly every time I try to play. Honestly, I'm not completely sure as to why I'm even bothering to post this. Is there a single dev in your company that even bothers to check the forums other than to post update news? From what I have seen, many players can't even play the game or are tired of having to start from scratch. The purpose of a forum is for the players to discuss the game, propose ideas to improve the game, and when necessary post bug and crash info so devs can at least attempt to fix the issues that have occurred. The only posts I have seen from you are update and award announcements. Along with many others, I love your game. It was a great idea, has promise, and for the most part I enjoyed the times I was able to play. The biggest issue that upsets me is that I paid for a game that was supposedly past beta and supposedly had the major bugs worked out. Instead, I paid for a game that was seemingly rushed, as if putting 1.0 on something that wasn't ready for it magically makes the game work. That being said, I really hope your game improves from the state it's in now. The only way I see that happening is for you to start paying attention to your community. Otherwise, you might not have one left if you continue to ignore it.
  4. I have spent some time looking at news and review articles for Astroneer. After searching a number of articles, I have found one that has any mention of issues the game has and those mentioned are minimal at best. The second I found is about concerning EULA contents. The third is an interview where co-founder Brendan Wilson talks about the game and communication with the community. It would seem that no one outside of the forum has any idea what is truly going on with the game. I know that there are some players who do not experience the same issues as myself and others. The fact is, if you choose to read the articles below, most articles I have read say the game is in near-perfect working order. There are no consistent CTD problems. The game does not more often than not freeze the entire system, requiring a hard reset. SES is in regular communication with the community and works with said community to patch and fix issues. I beg to differ. My proposal is this: I would like to try to contact one the many gaming news outlets and give them the true story on what the game is really like (for some of us). I am hoping that this may give SES the incentive to live up to what they have said in interviews, as well as what they have said in the forums. If any like-minded forum members would like to contribute to this, you are more than welcome. Listed below are the articles I mentioned above. What Gaming News Outlets Don't Know About Astroneer

I was thinking the same thing. There's almost no way the game can get the reviews it does if there is money being exchanged. Unless on the very far off chance there was a bug free version that was released to YouTubers and reviewers. I'm really not trying to sound like it's a conspiracy, because I don't think it is. I do think you may have hit the nail on the head though @The Touch of Grey Gamer. I appreciate your opinion and taking the time to post.

What Gaming News Outlets Don't Know About Astroneer

I appreciate your comment and opinion, you could be right. It's an idea I had last night and figured it would be good to get the community's opinion.
  7. I salute you, sir. If you would like I can post the full ini file so you can see if the changes appeared on mine. I don't believe it was naive at all, at least you're investigating possibilities. If this is at least part of the crashing issue, that's just bad coding on SES's end. I'll bet you if SES gave the source code to a group of community members (like that would happen) who have experience in coding, a fix could be possible. Code may not be the whole problem but it's definitely a good place to start.

The -nosound parameter works for me. FPS isn't all that great, but it is more smooth than it was before. Less jerky and that is definitely an improvement. What doesn't make sense is why having no sound does this. The sound files must take up a lot of RAM if that's the case, which is ridiculous. I shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth though, so I appreciate @brookymum and whoever figured this out to begin with.
  9. I tried the fix but was not able to stay in the game for more than five minutes before crashing. Also, I couldn't get the game to boot in windowed fullscreen so I don't think my results are valid. I'm not sure how to upload attachments, so here's my info: Time: From starting game: 2:25 Loading save to crash: 3:25 .ini file settings: [ScalabilityGroups] sg.ResolutionQuality=100.000000 sg.ViewDistanceQuality=3 sg.AntiAliasingQuality=3 sg.ShadowQuality=3 sg.PostProcessQuality=3 sg.TextureQuality=3 sg.EffectsQuality=3 sg.FoliageQuality=3 [/Script/Astro.AstroGameUserSettings] Language= Brightness=0 CloudQuality=1 MouseSensitivity=11 MasterVol=0.800000 MusicVol=0.800000 SoundFXVol=0.800000 VoiceVol=0.800000 AmbientVol=0.800000 InvertedCameraYAxixMouse=False bHoldToSprintMouse=True InvertedCameraYAxisGamepad=False bHoldToSprintGamepad=False bVehiclesUseAbsoluteSteering=True MaxPlayers=4 AllowInitialPlanetSelection=False HaveDefaultInputBindingsBeenApplied=True bUseVSync=True ResolutionSizeX=1366 ResolutionSizeY=768 LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=1366 LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=768 WindowPosX=-1 WindowPosY=-1 FullscreenMode=1 LastConfirmedFullscreenMode=2 PreferredFullscreenMode=1 version=5 AudioQualityLevel=0 FrameRateLimit=0.000000 DesiredScreenWidth=1366 DesiredScreenHeight=768 LastRecommendedScreenWidth=-1.000000 LastRecommendedScreenHeight=-1.000000 LastCPUBenchmarkResult=-1.000000 LastGPUBenchmarkResult=-1.000000 LastGPUBenchmarkMultiplier=1.000000 bUseHDRDisplayOutput=False HDRDisplayOutputNits=1000 I copied your file directly to my WindowsNoEditor folder and only changed the resolution. I tried twice, the first time it was set to windowed so I changed it in game, quit, and tried again. As you can see, it still reverted to windowed. I hope you get something out of this.
  10. The attachment download worked. Sorry for the lack of clarity.
  11. It worked, I will get back to you.
  12. @mystikro I will test it and get back to you when I finish. Thanks a lot for your work, even if it doesn't completely pan out. At least you're trying to fix the issue. Edit: Tried to access the attachment and got an error: Sorry, there is a problem This attachment is not available. I don't think you're on their side @Blind Io. I've seen enough of your posts to know that. Didn't find their joke very funny is all. I apologize if I offended, it wasn't my intention.

    Dev Road Map

I very much agree. What about those of us who weren't apart of EA and didn't know it was a joke. The fact that we paid for the game isn't a joke, neither is the fact that a large portion of the time (since just after release in my experience) the game has been a steaming pile of unplayable 💩. If we are so unimportant as well as many who have tried to contact SES via Discord, why don't they just shut the forum down. We're all just a bunch of whiny children apparently anyways. Yes, I am grumpy. At times I'm downright pissy. I get that if the game doesn't work 90% of the time I should find something else to do. I do just that. I play a different game, I come on here and with my limited experience try to assist those that have questions related to that limited experience, or I go do something not related to anything electronic at all. But, I play and enjoy the game when it does work. I'm grumpy because I paid money (for some insane reason really doesn't grow on trees) for something advertised as a working full release product. I got a game that is somewhat in beta, somewhat not depending on the day of the week it seems. When they put out another update, I really hope I actually get to use the jetpack without the game (and this is the only one I have that does it) telling my pc to eff off and die. Good point. When I first came on here, another member was telling me to post my system specs along with several other members. HTF is posting my specs going to fix the game? I wouldn't have bought the game if my pc didn't meet the minimum requirements (which if anyone cares, sits right below recommended). I made my point to them and as far as I've seen, the member mentioned hasn't "contributed" his opinion on system specs since. I looked through the forum at other user's posts and came to the conclusion that the hardware spectrum of bug reporters was too broad for hardware to be an issue. If hardware was the problem, the major issues would be isolated to a specific manufacturer, chipset, etc. But it's not. It's not a bad idea to post your specs but when you think that typing something into this magic box is going to magically fix the game, you may need to rethink that. Again, excellent point. I am sure if you go on Steam (or whatever store is your preference) you would probably find that quite a few indie games that have done well are made by small teams. Take Dragon Age 2 for example. That was a AAA company and it sucked. I love the games BioWare has put out in the past but that one almost killed the franchise for me. I pre-purchased the game, played for about two or three days and quit. I just finished it earlier this year for the simple reason of continuity. Small teams have a big advantage over large companies. They tend to put more love and care into the game because they're not an assembly line like most large companies are. I know I'll probably be burned at the stake for heresy for saying this but even CoD started to suck after a while. More of the same assembly line crap over and over with a different look. I could keep going but I don't want to beat the proverbial dead horse. Maybe I am a whiner. Although, I did pay for the right to whine when the 💩 broke the fan. If/after this stupidity is resolved, I may apologize for being a d*ck but not before. And no sir, I did not say duck....stupid auto correct...

    possible fix for crashing

I haven't had much chance to fiddle around with it, but I was thinking about trying out the -force-opengl or -force-d3d parameters to see if that would help at all. If you look in the game's folder, it has both D3d and OpenGL folders. The only reason I mention the parameters is when I played KSP (past-tense, waiting for money to get a better rig) I used the -opengl parameter to help with RAM usage. It did help somewhat but I don't know if anything but the devs can save Astroneer.

Then the update had better come with a bigger backpack. Otherwise that's what we're going to have to deal with on top of all of the bugs. It is pure insanity to say "Well, you can't play the game because it lags/crashes/you fall through the ground. But here's a super important piece of equipment that will probably kill you on every space of uneven ground. Good luck!" I can see it now: Your Astroneer is a skid mark at the bottom of the bunny hill....for the 47th time. I just looked at the road map and can someone help me out here? What purpose does a 'space snail' have? And what is it? Maybe, it's an extremely slow moving object in space that is inaccessible? Also, if you look at their 'Known Issues in Live Game' there isn't a single report of crashing during play other than the shuttle bug. The rest of the issues, however, can be found on the forum. Are they picking the most likely simpler to fix bugs and ignoring the possibly more complex ones? I had this thought that maybe, and it's just a thought mind you, SES isn't experiencing any of these issues and refuses to acknowledge the greater part of the community that does. Not an accusation, just a thought bouncing around my cranium. It would explain a lot too. So maybe, rollerblades work great on their end but will cause a thermo-nuclear explosion for us.

    Lashleaf damage.

It may be that the game is calculating the height from the plant, not the ground. I'm not saying it's not an issue, just as a possibility. Kind of like the bug that made the player bounce through solid terrain or the sinking rover in earlier post-release versions.

It definitely says a lot about the state of the game if you think you need to spend even more money on a new rig. Not that it's a bad thing, I know I need a new one pretty badly. It meets the recommended requirements for the game for the most part but I can't run many things newer than 2016-2017 because of graphics requirements. Someday dream rig....someday....🤩
  20. GeneralMayonaise

    What was in today's patch?

We'll see. If they don't fix the crashing issue, it's not going to matter. At least for the people who have the issue.

How To Revert Astroneer To Previous Version In Steam

Thanks for the info @Blind Io. I wasn't aware of that. @TaeLyn Please disregard the manifest ID for 1.0.14 in my last post.
  22. Since the 1.1.0 update has been uploaded to Steam, Astroneer has been crashing between 5-10 minutes of play after loading my save. I found instructions on how to revert the game back to 1.0.15 which has fixed the issue. I hope this helps those who are also experiencing this crashing issue. It's too bad because I know many of us were looking forward to the new features that are included with 1.1.0. Happy Astroneering Steam Community :: Guide :: How to Downgrade Game Version There is another thread with an incorrect title with the same info, so please disregard that one. I apologize for any confusion. https://forum.systemera.net/topic/52764-fix-for-those-whose-games-crash-when-trying-to-play-110/

How To Revert Astroneer To Previous Version In Steam

I apologize for taking so long to get back. I've been busy with some important personal things. I was looking through the manifest IDs and their dates and matching the dates with the patch notes from the official wiki. There was apparently a 1.0.14 (April 5th) but it links to 1.0.15 (April 11th, 12th in the manifest ID. Probably the release date vs the upload date) and has a different manifest ID. The depot ID doesn't change because that is the ID for the Windows version. If you are willing to try again, the manifest ID for 1.0.14 is: 7253159471298585207 Here is some clarification on the different IDs: App ID: Used by Steam to identify the game, DLC, or tool associated with the title. Depot ID: Denotes the operating system the game is compatible with, as well as common redistributables (DirectX, Visual C++, etc.) and DLCs (since they are separate from but associated with the base game. In this case, the original soundtrack has its own depot ID). Manifest ID: The manifest ID is assigned to each version update no matter how small from pre-alpha to post-release. Ex: Manifest ID 9196421424952813872 identifies patch 119 (version 0.2.10119.0). As far as I have seen, these IDs do not change. Here is the link to Astroneer on the steamdb website if you would like to look for yourself: ASTRONEER - AppID: 361420 - Steam Database I really hope that we can figure out why your game is auto-updating to 1.1.2.

I completely agree. Speaking up didn't always fix the problem but at least it brought some attention to the issue. It didn't always make me the most popular employee ever either but at least I tried. Same with the customer side. When I was younger (30s as well) I always wanted to be a beta tester but now I would definitely do it as a hobby as well. That last part goes without saying. Very true, and it is upsetting. I've read a few posts that have said that Steam's EA system is to blame for allowing SES to upload a 'finished' product. Not that I'm defending Steam, I have a few issues with them as well, but it's not their job to police developers. Although, it may have prevented this fiasco if they did. IMPO, with the cost bump to $30 at release (I didn't know about the game until 1.0.3, just what I've read in posts) it almost looks like they're in it for the money. That's all well and good, but not when they sacrifice the community they claimed to support. I'm not trying to throw around baseless accusations but that's just what is seems like (not everything that quacks like a duck is a duck analogy). I don't understand either how they could say they interact with the community. It's obvious they don't. I have stopped playing the game as well, there is a serious memory issue going on that I've tried to resolve on my end but am unable to. I have 8 GBs of RAM on my PC. Before launching the game, the task manager shows I'm only using between 30-40% of my physical memory. By the time I reach the title screen, it rises to 80-90% without loading the save. After loading the save, the stuttering gets so bad that it looks like it's frozen. Even KSP uses less RAM than that on start up and it is a much larger game. I respect your opinion on SES listening @Blind Io. You've been a member of the forum much longer than most of us, so you have much more experience with SES and their forum. I hope you're wrong though. I don't agree that I have gotten my money's worth out of the game but I hope to be able to. I am already going to delete my account with them. I am a huge supporter of free speech and don't appreciate being told that I need to keep my opinions to myself or to censor them. I haven't experienced this myself, the only reason I even registered for an account on Discord was to see if I could get in touch with a dev. Or someone in SES who would listen. It's a pretty much a non-issue though as I there wasn't a check mark to click to accept the rules. I mean come on, this is the internet we're talking about. There are trolls literally everywhere that get away with useless and sometimes offensive comments. All I want is to respectfully voice my concerns. Where has the handler been for the last 6 months? Obviously, if he has been 'handling' the forums, he's not done a very good job. We'll see what happens, if anything, when he gets back.

Your welcome, I did say I thought your idea was the best I had heard. I felt that it should be included because it made more than enough sense and would improve the game and SES as a whole. I only included part of it because if they were interested in reading it for themselves, at the very least it would get them on the forum. I had no idea Discord was politically motivated. So disappointing when people take something that is supposed to make a feature better and use it for something entirely unrelated and unnecessary to its intended purpose. Thanks for letting me know, I will definitely not be keeping my account. Honestly, I really didn't want it to begin with. I'm not a fan of social media and don't have much use for a voice chat feature seen as I don't have a quality mic. Which really seemed like the only possible upside for me. I really hope they do get it together, I would hate to see System Era go under. I don't want to see the game become one of those, "You remember that game... What was it called?" I certainly don't want the SES employees to lose their jobs, as I'm sure with today's internet based culture this could be a black mark on an otherwise impressive resume. I have worked customer service most of my life (which is really what responding to your community is) and I have seen several businesses either thrive or fail based only on customer service. It doesn't really matter what service you provide, if you can't bother to listen to your customers it's almost guaranteed they will find someone else who will. The only difference is we would probably lose Astroneer for good and that would be sad.
